Middle-Aged, Grumpy Writer Seeks Reader Who Loves a Good Story
You might be my reader if…
You love to read. I mean LOVE it. You’d rather have your nose stuck in a book (or in a Nook) than be glued to the couch watching hours of reality TV (though you might indulge on occasion simply for observation purposes). If you are immersed in a good book, the characters are engaged in better drama anyway.
You are not really into trends. You like to be different. If a story doesn’t strike your fancy, you don’t read it—even if the whole world is reading it, and people look at you like you are a FREAK, when you tell them you haven’t read such and such, and have no plans to read it.
You love words. The way they come together. The way they sound. The way they make you feel. You appreciate poetry. You appreciate beauty. You know writing a good story is an art.
You are intelligent, and you know what you like to read. You don’t need a stamp of approval from a big publishing house, your husband, your dog, or anyone else.
You might be a tad bit opinionated, possibly stubborn, and definitely not a pushover.
You believe an entertaining story and a well-crafted story can be one in the same. In other words, the story can be beautifully written (literary fiction) and still have an awesome plot (thrilling literary fiction, anyone?).
You don’t expect every ending to be happy— rainbows, house-trained puppies, and funnel cakes. (Mmm, funnel cakes.)
You like to take a walk on the dark side of human nature. You don’t want to live in the dark place, but you like to visit and see the sights.
Most of all, you love a good story.
Hat tip to Holly Lisle for the "Are you my reader" idea.
